The course is designed to expose the student to research methods and paradigms, and to provide the opportunity to explore potential research topics in computer science. The course specifically covers the research lifecycle, research methods, supporting skills and professional issues related to a research career. Students will practice literature review, critical reading of research papers and the writing and presentation of a research proposal. The course also introduces basic experimental and statistical methods as applied to computer science research including research design, data collection, analysis, validation and report writing.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • identify a research problem in the context of the research lifecycle;
  • apply scientific and statistical methodologies in the conduct of research;
  • acquire supporting skills for doing research in computer science; and,
  • develop a proposal on the research problem identified following the most appropriate method and writing style.
